Environmental Evaluation Group Archives

From 1978 to 2004, the Environmental Evaluation Group (EEG) conducted independent technical evaluations of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). EEG was federally funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), but DOE did not select its staff or control what issues it considered, nor did it have any prior approval of the reports that were published.

EEG regularly made public reports to legislative committees and participated in other public processes. Its 90 technical reports were published and distributed at no charge.

DOE defunded EEG in 2004. Until now, EEG's reports have not been available on the Internet. SRIC is making the reports available, as they provide valuable technical insights into many issues. So the reports are of historic interest and some of the issues are of continuing relevance.

Among the last activities conducted by EEG was a workshop on March 16, 2004 related to technical issues regarding some of the high-level waste tanks at DOE's Hanford, Washington site and whether some of the wastes could be disposed at WIPP. Because EEG funding was terminated shortly after the workshop, the planned report of the workshop was not completed. However, in 2013 DOE again proposed sending some of that tank waste to WIPP. Two of the EEG scientists in charge of the workshop - George Anastas and James Channell - compiled a summary of the workshop to enhance public understanding of those issues.
