PURPA  Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, 1978 (Carter administration)

FERC  Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

PUHCA  The Public Utility Holding Act of 1935 forced the breakup and restructure of the holding companies that had controlled much of the nation's power supply

1992 Energy Policy Act  Prohibited the FERC from mandating retail competition, it authorized the agency to open and expand the wholesale power market and approve new competitive generating companies.

Orders 888 and 889  In April 1996, FERC issued its landmark Orders 888 and 889 to open the wholesale market, and began encouraging states to open competition at the retail level.
