“New Mexico is an energy colony and energy development and natural resources exploitation must remain the focus of much of SRIC’s work. Although we continue to study problems which we feel are timely and of national import, as a public interest research organization in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Southwest Research and Information Center continues to remain responsive to community groups with constantly changing needs, bringing our technical and journalistic expertise to bear on local problems.”

We Need Your Help
SRIC has been around for 35 years, and we plan on being around for a lot longer. But in order to do this we need your help. Make a donation today to help us continue our work. Even better, how about donating a small amount each month – just $10 per month would help SRIC continue to provide assistance to communities. We are also able to take credit card donations via the phone, (505) 262-1862, or online at our website: www.sric.org. Thank you!

“Seeds of Change” Exhibit
The Albuquerque chapter of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and the University of New Mexico SGI Buddhist Club are proud to bring to UNM the “Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter & Human Potential” exhibit for a day of awareness. This exhibit was created by SGI and The Earth Charter Initiative and was first shown at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. These educational panels will be on display at UNM on April 17, 2006. In addition, New Mexico organizations will have informational tables at the event.

At 6:00 pm there will be a reception with speeches. The SGI has invited The Honorable Stewart Udall, former Secretary of the Interior, and Jack Loeffler, activist and author of Adventures with ED, as key speakers. This is a free event.

Proposed Revisions to Solid Waste Regulations
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is revising it Solid Waste Regulations. Although many of the regulations will remain, some others have been changed. Community and advocacy organizations have proposed environmental justice language and provisions that would benefit both low-income and communities of color. Industry, Business, Municipalities and Counties are also proposing or opposing revisions. The proposed regulations will be posted on NMED’s website (www.nmenv.state.nm.us) on April 3, 2006. People interested in testifying have until April 17 to submit a Notice of Intent to File Technical Testimony. The Hearings will begin on May 2, and are tentatively scheduled to last a few days.
