Thank You CFC Donors
Southwest Research and Information Center extends a sincere thank you to federal workers who donated to SRIC during the 2003 Central and Northern New Mexico Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Your donations are now coming in, and are assisting us in continuing our work to protect the environment and our health. We have been informed that we will again be on the CFC list, and hope to see many of you at CFC Kick Off events later this year. Also, SRIC staff is available to talk about our work to your organization. Please contact your Human Resources department for more details.

SRIC & TECHNOLOGY
Southwest Research and Information Center, like many other organizations, has a wish list - "I wish we had this," and "I wish we had that." Well, we've gone beyond wishes now, and we need your help. Staff is spending more time out in the field assisting communities, and our technology needs have grown. We're working with government and health groups to do environmental testing, but we need to get the results into the hands of communities. Our current technology is not up to date - we need a projector for community meetings, new laptops, a digital camera, software, etc. To get there, we need YOUR help.

NO HIGH-LEVEL WASTE AT WIPP?
On June 3, the public hearing scheduled on the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) proposal to keep high-level wastes out of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) was postponed indefinitely. SRIC and other citizen groups did not object because the Department of Energy (DOE) agreed to submit its own change to the WIPP permit that would keep such wastes out of WIPP.

DOE had previously argued that NMED did not have authority to impose such a prohibition. DOE's request to modify the permit must be filed in early July, and a 60-day public comment period should then occur. The next issue of Voices from the Earth will include a further update.
