Voices from the Earth: Current Issue
Table of For as adamant as my country has been about civil liberties during peacetime, it has a long history of failing to preserve civil liberties when it perceived its national security threatened. This series of failures is particularly frustrating in that it appears to result not from informed and rational decisions that protecting civil liberties would expose the United States to unacceptable security risks, but rather from the episodic nature of our security crises. But it has proven unable to prevent itself from repeating the error when the next crisis came along.

DOWNWINDER INFORMATION AVAILABLE The National Institutes of Health has a series of pamphlets available free to the public (while supplies last) on Thyroid Cancer and Downwinders - individuals exposed to radioactive fallout resulting from aboveground Nuclear testing in Nevada (1954-63). The pamphlets are: 2003 COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN Thanks again to those individuals who contributed to SRIC in the past as part of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) for Central and Northern New Mexico. We've just received word that we will be on the 2003 CFC cycle. In addition, changes were made to the program allowing both State and Federal workers to make contributions. While we're a little early (the campaign runs from September 1-December 15, 2003), we wanted to give folks a heads up about deadlines and making a contribution to SRIC. Your generous contribution lets us continue our work on issues related to environmental equality and health, and economic concerns related to the environment. See your Human Resources office for more information, or contact Don or Annette at (505) 262-1862. SUPPORT Southwest Research and Information Center depends on the gifts of individuals, foundations and corporations for its ability to work on behalf of New Mexico's environmental issues and concerns. Without YOUR help, we cannot take on the pressing environmental, health and economic issues that affect our daily lives. How about pledging an amount each month for the next 12 months? A pledge of just $10 provides $120 a year to help continue our work on behalf of the environment. Just let us know and we can send your monthly reminders, or set things up to charge your credit card each month. Call Annette or Don for more details at (505) 262-1862. SUBMISSIONS WANTED We are looking for voluntary assistance with our publication Voices from the Earth. If you are interested in writing a book review, or if you have an article you think we should print, please contact Annette Aguayo, Editor, at (505) 262-1862 or Admin@sric.org. We reserve the right to use or edit submissions. No press releases, please. |
